● Note 1: Alternatives for A10 and U10P cable

You can use the MDA524 instead of the cables A10 and U10P for additional benefits.

● Note 2: Alternatives for GN1200

You can use the Jabra Link 860 instead of the cable GN1200 for additional benefits.

● Note 3: The Extension Arm has been discontinued

By 10/10/2024, the extension arm required previously for a few older Polycom phones has been discontinued. It was required when using a handset lifter or an EHS cable.

● Note 4: Polycom Phones with 2.5mm Headset Jack

The Polycom phones IP320/321 and IP330/331 contain a 2.5mm headset jack.

Note 4.1: Preferred Equipment for 2.5mm Connection

The direct connect cable is preferred if you want a 2.5mm connection. Alternatively, you can use the U10P cable or the M22 amplifier with Polycom Part Number 2200-11095-002. It converts the RJ9 connection into the 2.5mm connection.

Note 4.2: Polycom Part Number and Phone SIP Firmware for APP-51 EHS Cable

For using an EHS cable, you will need Polycom Part Number 2200-11095-002. This transforms the RJ9 connection into the 2.5mm one. The Phone SIP firmware must be greater than 3.1 Rev B to support the usage of an EHS cable.

Note 4.3: Polycom Part Number to Support Wireless Headsets Without an EHS Cable or Handset Lifter

The wireless headsets, including CS510, CS520, CS530, CS540 and Savi Series, require Polycom Part Number 2200-11095-002 to use the headset button.

Note 4.4: Requirements for Older Generation Wireless Headsets

The older generation wireless headsets CS50, CS55, CS70N, CS351N, CS361N and CS510S can use the Plantronics adapter 78333-01. For using this, you will have to bypass the EHS cable audio connection. Connect this adapter between the CS wireless base and the phone headset connector.

● Note 5: Incompatibility Warning and Compatible Alternative for Link 380 USB Dongle

The Link 380 USB Dongle is NOT compatible with the Jabra USB/Bluetooth headsets. The Link 950 and compatible EHS cable via the telephone RJ9 port are compatible for the connection.

● Note 6: Need for Poly 85638-01 cable

The Poly 85638-01 cable is needed to use the Poly APP-51 and EHS cable for using a sidecar with Polycom VVX 101, VVX 201, VVX 300, VVX 301, VVX 311, VVX 400, VVX 401, VVX 411, VVX 500, VVX 501, VVX 600, and VVX 601 phones.

Note 6.1: Newer Poly Voyager and Savi Series Headsets

To use these headsets with the phone, the phone must have an SIP application 3.1.2 Rev B or higher running. Moreover, it must be running another application, i.e., BootROM 4.1.0 or later, when using Poly APP-51.

● Note 7: Compatible Options for Jabra USB/Bluetooth Headsets

The compatible options for Jabra USB/Bluetooth headsets are Link 950 and the EHS cable via the RJ9 port. Link 380 Dongle is not compatible.

● Note 8: Which Firmware is Used for Poly Voyager Focus?

If you want to use the Poly Voyager Focus headset for the Polycom phones, it must be running on firmware 5.4.2.

What Equipment Do You Need for Setting Up Wired/Corded Headsets for Polycom Phones?

You will require two main components for setting up a business-grade wired headset solution: a headset and either an amplifier or a direct-connect cable.

Both have a modular clip or 2.5mm plug on one end of their terminals. The headset and the telephone are connected in a quick-disconnect connection.

For organizations using different phone brands, exploring our complete range of corded headsets can help you find solutions compatible with multiple systems including NEC and Panasonic.

What is a Quick Disconnect Connection?

The quick disconnect allows you to leave your headset on even when you are not available at your desk. In addition, you can instantly disconnect the amplifier or direct-connect cable when you plan to leave.

Benefit: Maximum flexibility and freedom of movement while maintaining connection.

Amplifiers

Cost: ~$77.25 (MDA524)

An amplifier is plugged into the handset port of the phone to connect the headset with the Poly phone. It provides full control over the volume of the speaker and the microphone. They are mostly used with the older Poly phones.

Advantage: Full volume control for speaker and microphone.

Use Case: Older Poly phones without built-in amplifiers.

Direct Connect Cables

Cost: ~$29.95 (U10P or 2.5mm)

The direct-connect cable is used for newer Poly phones that have a built-in amplifier. They are an affordable alternative to the amplifier and serve the same purpose. They are plugged into the headset port of the telephone to establish the connection between the headset and the telephone. But they will not let you control the volume of the outgoing voice.

Advantage: Budget-friendly, simple setup.

Disadvantage: No outgoing voice volume control.

3

How Corded Headsets Work with the Poly/Polycom Phones?

It's obvious from the previous section that you will need to set up an amplifier or a direct-connect cable for corded solutions.

In this section, let's learn how to set up these for making a corded headset solution work for your phone.

How to Set Up QD Headsets Using an Amplifier?

Step-by-Step Process:

For setting a quick disconnect headset for older phones, you will need an amplifier. Plug the amplifier into the handset port on your phone. After this, to receive each call, you have to remove the handset. For disconnecting the call, you will simply return the handset back to the cradle.

Important Note:

If the Poly phone has a headset port, the amplifier will not work for this phone. It is compatible only with the handset port.

How to Set Up a Headset with a Direct-Connect Cable?

Step-by-Step Process:

If you have a Poly phone with a headset port, you will need a direct-connect cable to connect the headset. Simply plug in the direct connect cable to the headset port on the phone. After this, you will have to press the ringing line if you want to answer the call. To disconnect the call, just press the "headset" button.

Important Note:

The amplifier provides full volume control for the speaker and microphone. On the other hand, a direct connect cable will not provide control over the outgoing voice volume. You can get the direct-connect cable at half the price of the amplifier, so it is more budget-friendly.

What Equipment Is Needed for Wireless Headsets?

A business-grade wireless headset solution requires a complete setup.

A wireless headset will work only with the following components of the setup. Understanding different wireless headset options and Bluetooth alternatives helps you choose the right solution for your needs.

A Wireless Headset

A wireless headset is needed for communication free of wires.

Features:

• Freedom from desk constraints

• Multiple wearing styles available

• Professional audio quality

• Long battery life for all-day use

A/C Power Adapter

The AC power adapter is the power source of the base to support it in performing core operations.

Purpose:

• Provides constant power to base

• Enables all base operations

• Supports charging functionality

Base/Charger

The base/charger is the main component of the setup that powers the main operations. It also charges the headset when you are not using it. Moreover, it handles compatibility, charging, and other core operations. The LED lights on the wireless base indicate power, charging and other features.

Functions:

• Charges headset when idle

• Controls compatibility settings

• LED indicators for status

• Manages wireless connectivity

Handset Lifter or EHS Cable

These are the optional components that are needed only for supporting remote call capabilities.

Options:

Handset Lifter (HL10): Mechanical device for remote answering

EHS Cable (APP-51): Electronic connection for newer Polycom models

Both enable answer and hang-up from anywhere

5

How to Remotely Answer/Hang Up Calls with Wireless Headsets?

Wireless headsets give you the freedom of movement, but do not provide the remote capabilities to answer/end calls.

To handle the calls remotely, you need either a handset lifter or an Electronic Hook Switch (EHS) cable. Both almost work in the same way. When the phone rings, both components will sense the call and generate an alert in the form of a beep sound.

How to Use a Handset Lifter for Remote Call Answer/End?

Step-by-Step:

Answer Call: To answer the call using a handset lifter, you need to press the Call Control button to attend the call.

End Call: When you have finished talking, and now you want to end the call, press the Call Control button again.

Other Operations: Now you can return to the telephone for dialling and transferring the calls.

Advantages:

• ✓ Works with most Polycom phone models

• ✓ No programming required

• ✓ Reliable mechanical operation

How to Use an EHS Cable for Remote Call Answering/Hanging Up?

Step-by-Step:

Answer Call: Press the Call Control button when the phone rings.

End Call: Press the Call Control button again to disconnect.

How It Works: With the EHS cable, the process of receiving and ending the call is the same, with a slight difference. The EHS cable does not need any mechanical motor or physical movement of the handset to establish the call. It establishes the call electronically.

Advantages:

• ✓ Silent electronic operation

• ✓ No moving parts

• ✓ Faster response time

• ✓ Cleaner desk appearance

► Which Option to Choose?

Both options are good if you want to have to handle remote calls, but what best suits your headset? Check this in Section 1 of the guide to see which option is compatible with your specific Polycom model.

Special Programming for Poly/Polycom Phone Headsets

You have to program the Polycom phones if you want your headset to work for them.

You need to do the following special programming to make them work properly with your headsets.

Programming to Support the Use of EHS Cable for Wireless Headsets

Requirements:

If you want to use the EHS cable, the headset port must be activated on the phone. Otherwise, you will not be able to access the remote capabilities.

Steps to Activate:

Step 1: Before programming, please make sure that the EHS cable is not plugged in.

Step 2: From the phone, select: Menu > Settings > Basic > Preferences > Headset > Analog Headset Mode or Electronic Hook Switch Mode.

Step 3: Scroll down to the Plantronics mode. Now, press Select > Menu to return to the idle display.

Step 4: Once the port is activated, the EHS cable can be readily inserted into the phone and headset base.

Additional Notes:

This procedure has been implemented on the Poly WX phones, and it worked for the corded solutions. This setting will also work for the intercom to automatically trigger the headset.

How to Enable Headset Memory Mode?

Steps:

Step 1: From Home view, select Settings > Basic > Preferences > Headset > Headset Memory.

Step 2: Now, you have to select the Enabled option from the Headset Memory mode screen.

Step 3: Now press the "Home" button.

Step 4: Now press the "headset" button two times to activate the Headset Memory mode. As an indicator for headset memory mode activation, the headset key will flash.

How to Do Speaker Phone Volume Setting Using Corded USB Headsets?

Steps:

If you are interested in setting the headset speaker phone volume settings permanently, follow these steps:

Step 1: Log in to your web browser.

Step 2: Head to Utilities > Import and Export Configuration.

Step 3: Save this code in a text editor with a file extension .cfg:

<Volume voice.volume.persist.usbHeadset="1" />

Step 4: Under Import Configuration, select Choose File.

Step 5: Now select the saved .cfg file to import.

Result: Now the speaker volume will remain the same permanently as you have set.
